Name: Mari Soppela
Nationalities: Finnish, Dutch
Occupation: Documentary film director and producer
Education: MA, Middlesex University, London, UK
I am a Finnish-born artist and documentary filmmaker from Amsterdam. My journey into the world of visual storytelling began with my studies in videography, computer graphics, and interactive art. Equipped with a video camera and a computer, I’ve explored a multitude of creative avenues since the early 1990s. From camerawork to animation, interface design to interaction programming, video editing to web design, and finally, documentary filmmaking, I’ve embraced diverse roles in pursuit of my artistic vision.
One of my early forays into digital art involved programming a mesmerising flock of snowflakes swirling in a particle system, birthing the hybrid 3D animation titled ‘Lumi’. Additionally, I conceptualised and crafted an interactive recursive image known as ‘Russian Dolls‘. Originally conceived as the interface for my CD-ROM project, ‘Family Files‘, this split-screen design later served as the inspiration for my debut film of the same title.
In 2006, together with composer Leo Anemaet, I founded LPMA Productions, a film and TV production company based in Finland. Our collaborative efforts have led to the production of four out of the five feature documentary films I’ve directed. Working alongside small yet diverse international teams, we thrive on the creative synergy that fuels our projects.
